Avoiding DIY Eye Injuries

Eye protection

Research from The College of Optometrists has found that each year in the UK around 30,000 people end up with eye injuries due to DIY activities. They are suggesting that those undertaking any DIY work should take special care of their eyes and wear the recommended eye protection.

The research also showed that around 90% of those questioned did not wear eye protection while completing their DIY jobs, even if it is recommended. This is also backed up by the fact that 45% of people will attempt a DIY job, even if they don’t know what they are doing.

Dr Susan Blakeney from the college has suggested that eye protection should be worn if there is any risk of foreign bodies entering the eye. She points out that each person only has one set of eyes and that it is worthwhile looking after them.

Eye protection for use while doing DIY should meet the European Standard BSEN 166 level of protection.
